When Summer Ends
Illustrated by Marisabina Russo

This was my first picture book. It began with a conversation with my my daughter Angie, who was four at the time. She came up to me, like the child in the book, and said, "When summer ends I will cry and cry." When I asked her why, she began to run through a list of her favorite summer things. I began to remind her of the joys of some of the other seasons, and before we'd made in around the year, I knew I wanted to write this book. And so, this one is really by Angie and me together.

One of the delights of this story for me is that when friends in Juneau saw the illustrations, there were so many little touches that were like our household -- the red house, the blue swimming pool in the yard, the golden dog, the Easter egg tree. They assumed Marisabina knew something about our lives, when in fact, we'd never corresponded and I had no idea what the book would look like until I received an advance copy. Needless to say, I was thrilled. (The corn growing on the cover should have clued folks in that these weren't Juneau-based illustrations.)

This book is out of print, but I have copies available for $11.95 plus shipping (by priority mail).
